DEPLOYMENT OF TECHNOLOGY FOR SURVEILLANCE, MONITORING, AND MITIGATION OF CRIME WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SERVICE SPACE

Correctional facilities worldwide face significant challenges in maintaining security, preventing violence, and facilitating rehabilitation, with traditional approaches often proving insufficient in addressing complex institutional dynamics. The integration of advanced technologies offers promising solutions for enhancing surveillance, monitoring, and crime mitigation within correctional environments. This paper examines the effects of technological deployment in correctional service spaces, utilizing electronic research databases including Google Scholar, ProQuest, JSTOR, and Research Gate. Current evidence indicates that technology implementation manifests through various forms including video surveillance systems, biometric identification technologies, body-worn cameras, electronic monitoring devices, and data analytics platforms. These technological interventions have resulted in improved facility security, enhanced contraband detection, reduced violence incidents, more effective staff deployment, and evidence-based rehabilitation program development. Significant challenges impeding technology adoption include budgetary constraints, infrastructure limitations, staff resistance to technological change, privacy concerns, and inadequate technical expertise. The paper therefore recommends that effective technology integration in correctional facilities requires comprehensive implementation frameworks, sustainable funding mechanisms, specialized staff training programs, balanced privacy-security approaches, and collaborative partnerships with technology providers to ensure innovations address specific institutional needs while respecting human rights considerations.
