Harnessing Nigeria’s Demographic Dividend: Empirical Evidence from Longitudinal National Data

Abstract

This paper analysed Nigeria’s potential to harness her demographic dividend leading to accelerated economic development. Adopting Demographic Transition Theory, the research utilized quantitative methodology to situate the relationship between Nigeria’s shifting age structure and key economic indicators. Utilizing longitudinal data from the World Bank and the United Nations Population Division from 1990 to 2022, the analysis adopted regression models to measure the impact of demographic changes on GDP per capita growth. The study indicated that a 1 percentage point increase in the working-age population share is associated with a 0.4 percentage point increase in annual GDP per capita growth, confirming a statistically significant demographic dividend. Nevertheless, the potential remains stagnant due to significant regional disparities, especially between the Southern and Northern parts of Nigeria. For instance, while primary school enrollment exceeds 90% nationally, secondary enrollment falls below 50%, and critical infrastructure gaps persist, with only 57% of the population having access to electricity. The study concludes that Nigeria's youthful population, with 43% of its 220 million people under 15 years of age, presents a moment to decide how to address the issues by focusing on benefiting from the demographic dividends. The paper recommends targeted policy interventions focused on strategic investments in secondary and tertiary education, healthcare quality, and high-density job creation in manufacturing and digital sectors to transform the current demographic potential into sustainable and inclusive economic prosperity.
